Hi John,

That is a beautiful story Sir and as Curt said, it will be an honourable tribute to them both...

Sometimes we end up very close to some very unlikely people. I knew you'd have a great story, it's an added bonus that this one is true. I'm sure they'll be watching.

Thanks guys. I really had not intended to tell the story because it was such a personal thing to me. Then again I decided that I really could not think of Ruth'S Place as a tribute without going public with why I was building it. My hope is that the Dio will be worthy of the love I felt, and still feel, for Ruth and Ralph.

I'm tied up this weekend so not much will get done, but Tuesday I intend to start cutting the wood for the diner car. Hopefully I will get something posted by the end of next week. Thanks again for your kind comments. They mean a lot to me coming from a group of guys that I so highly respect.

Here is the second car intended for the diorama.  It is again a curbside.

This is the last of the cars until the diner car is finished.  I have had some interruptions on the drawings, but I think I will be able to get them done by tomorrow and get the diner started.

Okay guys, here is the beginning of the diner car.

First I did some line drawings so that I will have something to reference to keep me going in the right direction. This is a sample of the drawings I do.

I then cut bass wood strips on my band saw. I have a Sears rip off of the Proxon band saw that is quite accurate. I'm able to cut strips as thin as 0.3125 (1/32") with good accuracy. I use 1/4" foam board as the backing. I'll have more to post in the next day or so.

Had a little set back Curt. Real life interfered. I'm back on it now and will be posting some later today.

PostSubject: Re: Ruth's Place Diorama   Sun 08 May 2016, 2:45 am

Hey guys, I owe you an apology. For the last almost a week I have been almost completely out of the hobby. On Monday of last week my wife entered a local regional hospital for a rather complicated reconstructive surgery on her left foot. The plan was for her to have the surgery and be released from the hospital the next morning. Things don't always go according to plan.

The surgery went off as scheduled and appears to have been successful. Unfortunately, she suffered SEVERE nausea and vomiting as a result of the anesthesia. Attempts to overcome this were completely unsuccessful. In addition her pain from the surgery remained totally out of control. Various pain medications did not have any effect on the pain for more than 30 minutes or so.

It took until Friday before the doctors were able to get either of these problems under control. During that time I remained at the hospital with her, sleeping in a chair in her room. Consequently not much has been getting done.

Finally yesterday it was decided she could go home to recover. She was discharged at 2:00 pm and the trip home took a bit over 15 minutes. When we arrived her first priority was a trip to the bathroom. We were using a wheelchair as she must remain nonweightbearing for the next eight weeks. As she was transferring from the toilet back to the wheelchair her "good" leg gave out allowing her to fall. When she hit the floor her head snapped back striking the wall. This in resulted in a split in the scalp and copious bleeding.

I immediately called 911. When the medics arrived they decided it was necessary for her to go back to the hospital. They were concerned that because of the blood thinners she is on she might have brain swelling or bleeding. Needless to say, by now this tough old retired cop was a freaking basket case. Anyway by 3:15 she was back in the hospital! She had been out a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

To wrap things up, it turned out there was no brain swelling or bleeding. She was finally released again at about 10:00 last night. She is now back home and I'm hovering over her.

I don't normally whined this much, but SWMBO and I have been married for almost 56 years and this is the worst scare she has ever given me. Hopefully now I'll be able to get back on the diorama this week and get some progress made. Wish us luck.

Best wishes to you both.

I hadn't realised she'd been knocked out cold when she fell John...... that must have been scary indeed.

Give her my best wishes and a big hug from me to Bro!

Skype soon.

Scary moments for sure. I'm glad it wasn't worse than that for Mrs J. and wish her a fast and complete recovery John. No apologies needed here and we will try to behave while you nurse your better half.

Wow! Wishing her a speedy recovery and you are doing just as you should! The hobby is always here, sometimes other important events in life draw us away from it. I know that all to well first hand.
