PostSubject: HMS Duke of York - Revell 1/700   Wed 03 Apr 2013, 2:05 am

This kit is the old Matchbox Duke of York from 1980 reboxed by Revell. By current standards this one is close to a bath toy. But I'm not fussy and I think it will be fun to build. I can't find any accurate camouflage information on the internet or in my books so I am doing a bit of guess work with the painting instructions and info I managed to scrounge.

Great stuff Chris. Can you include a Tamiya paint jar in the next uodate for sense of scale please?

Still a pretty good size model. For serious ship modelers there are, just like for vehicles, photo etched parts to upgrade kits. Yours looks large enough to not need much extra detailing. Good luck and let us see if you decide on a camo paint scheme.

Thanks guys. This kit is fun, some of the details are a bit oversized, not a criticism but a reason not to go overboard with trying for accuracy which sometimes can be a bit overwhelming. Don't have to tell you guys that. I airbrushed the deck using Tamiya wood deck tan, the rest of the ship I am doing freehand with my brushes. I guess it is like someone painting butterflies and ducks on a Wedgewood plate LOL. Not saying that I am doing a work of art, but I will be glad when its finished. I am using Lifecolor paints for the hull sides, they are easy to use with paint brushes and give an excellent finish. Such a change from Tamiya which were always hit and miss when using a brush.

Here are some progress shots. The deck is not attached to the hull yet, dry fit only, hence the gap.

Did you mask off all that little stuff on te deck or do you have a trick of some kind to make it easier? Looks great.

Thanks Buck. I sprayed the deck with Tamiya wood deck tan. I then paint in all those little details with a very fine paint brush. The trick is to hold the deck with one hand and paint a group of little bits on one side then turn the deck and paint another side, then turn etc. If you painted each bit individually you would be at the bench all day.

Thanks heaps. Yes, you are right, it would be a Tamiya kit if I was starting out. I recently finished the Tamiya HMS Repulse. It was a joy to build from start to finish. All parts fitted without any problems. It is a brilliant kit. I usually build OOB with no extras. Here is a picture of the finished ship.

Chris, I really admire your skill at painting those tiny bits. It sounds like I should get some Lifecolor paints to do my brush painting with.

Thanks for your support guys!

Time for an update. Lots of gaps, joins etc but it is easy on the eye and a bit of fun. The Lifecolor paints are excellent, I recommend them for those who like using a paintbrush.

I did the camo scheme the wrong way round on the first funnel, careless, so have to redo.

If you keep up with this sort of excellent work, I'll be buying 1/700 ships next.

Hi Folks

not really into this stuff but just had to join up and lend (potentially) a hand. My grandfather was based down in the Falklands on the whale research ships. But he like everyone else got dragged into the war. Sadly he passed away in 1973 before I was old enough to ask him anything about his life. But I was left with the photo tin.

I have no idea when this was taken and assume that the guy on the left of the photo is my grandfather. But I do not know what ship this person is stood on. It occurred to me that I could maybe work out what ship it was if I could trace the ship in the background. (I am tracing my family history). Anyway I went on various war forums and eventually some amazing person managed to match the camo. To HMS Duke of York. So here is my photo from my grandfathers photo tin. (Hope this works)

And also you can find an image of Duke of York in the same camo here

Hope that helps. Now what I need is to find when she was in those colours date wise so I can take what I do know and match it to her location here.

In fact here is a much better photo of her with the exact same camo. This photo is apparently taken in a fjord during her career.

Her career timeline should help identify when she had that camo

It's looking good Chris.

I wouldn't have known about the camo if you hadn't mentioned it!!
