PostSubject: 1993 Lotus Esprit Sport 300 Turbo   Fri 16 Feb 2018, 4:47 am

I was on a Porsche run but the one on the bench now is a custom and I have lost a little interest in it.

So on to something mostly out of the box which for me lately is a little out of the ordinary.

I picked up this kit off of eBay and have always liked the lines of this car. The only mods planed so far is to adjust the ride height and maybe add some PE screen instead of the kit supplied solid panels for the grill work.

I like the Lotus dark green and I found some Dupli-Color at Meijer's on sale so I pretty much am set for this one.

Here are some sprue shots. (I usually forget to take those). The wheel and tires for this kit are really good for a Revel-ogram offering.

Quite a few parts and some pretty good detail. I have read up that some of the sub assemblies go together well themselves but don't mate up to the final product very well so I am going to test fit quite a bit. That means I will need to assemble some stuff out of order and try to paint it up as best I can.

I already adjusted the spindles on the front. I cut them off and raised them on the steering arm about 3mm, which will lower the body over the tires by the same amount. I mocked it up to check the adjustment.

Here are the pictures

Pretty cool! I like the Lotus and have the kit. Back when i built, I ordered the Entex brand Esprit and was disappointed it was a"curbside." Thanx for the build fotos here. Neat-o!

Good luck with it Mitch. I always like the lines on this car too. I have the Esprit Turbo Monogram offering, I'll be watching this and learning from you.

Thanks guys. I like the kit a lot. It has over 100 parts and has a lot of excellent molded in detail, however the alignment of the parts is off just enough that without thorough test fitting the finished model would look like a mess. There are only a few pin marks and just 4 or 5 sink marks. The mold lines on the body were intelligently placed and don't take a lot of work to remove.

Like most model kits the ride height is way too high. An easy enough fix for the front end. The rear end is another story. The Esprit has inboard rear disc brakes. The rear swing arms/bearing carriers are located mainly by the coil over spring assemblies. I guess a person could just cut them off, shorten them and glue them back on.... but if you have to rework them anyway, why not improve the whole sub-assembly?

You can also see that if you put it together out of the box, the coil overs are too long from the get go.
In the mock up you can see that the rear wheels are way too far out of the wheel opening with almost a 5 mm gap between the arch and the tire... not good, and this causes some negative camber and some wicked toe out. The rear tires would be bald in 5 miles of driving and not just because this little car is so light and has a turbo... Not to mention the car would look drunk...

I do like how they engineered the mounting of the rear wheels. The outer CV joint and boot are a separate part and act as a retainer to hold the wheel center shaft into the swing arm bearing carrier. It cuts the half shaft in two but I think it's a smart and sturdy way to mount the wheel to the swing arm and still let the tire spin.

I found that the red plug wire stock I have looks good for the rear springs for the coil overs and I wouldn't have to paint it. I tried a couple of different sizes of dowel until I found a diameter that looked good. Next I cut the coil overs off just below the top spring perch. I drilled everything so it could be reinforced inside with wire and to allow me to adjust some angles on final assembly. If I use a slow CA I have time to tweak the angles a little before it sets up.

Instead of using new stock for the shocks I just whittled and sanded off the molded on springs. It all fits correctly now and I have some fudge room when I put it all together. Just in case they are a fuzz too short.

One thing I want to do on this one is take a page from Mr. Hirakawa and be very diligent about neatness and detail painting. I am going to have to throttle myself when it comes to that portion of the build because I build fast and often don't let paint dry long enough before I start handling the parts. I also suffer from the "if it jambs, force it. if it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway" syndrome as well...

Here are this evenings pictures...

I've never had a shot at doing my own springs before. I think I'll give it a go on the upcoming Stratos. Thanks for documenting this build so well. Outstanding.

Great idea saving the cores of those springs. Looks like it will turn out great.

Nice work Mitch.

Thanks guys.
I afraid its starting to happen again...
Unless one you can talk me out of it...
Im seriously thinking of switching out the 2.2 four pot turbo for a V10 from an Audi R8 Spider...

Coming along nicely Mitch. Go ahead and shove that engine in there.

Lol, Webby's comment was enough to push me off the ledge and I did it...

I didn't want to remake the motor mounts so I carefully sawed the engine off at the main part of the block. I did the same to the V10 and saved that part to salvage the 4 cylinder. Its going in the engine parts box. I probably will never use it because I like V engines best but who knows.
The Lotus chassis is galvanized steel, I tried to replicate that...
I made headers out of solder.

Interesting idea with the solder. Noted for future reference. Coming on great by the way. I love the metal effects.

Nice Mitch, the Esprit did eventually get a V8 anyway.

3.5 litre twin turbo, 350 bhp.

That backbone chassis looks really nice.

That's a tiny V8. The 2.2 four cylinder turbo made 300 bhp. Thsts where rhe sport 300 name came from.

The V10 Audi specs at 600bhp.

That engine would twist that frame like a pretzel

Well Mitch being a dragster type of chap, I'm sure he'd prefer to crash and burn with a V 10 Curt

That's really stuffing it. I thought I was pushing it when I basically did the same thing, years ago, with a Taurus SHO V6.

That's what she said...

Here is the paint job after the clear dried and before any polishing.

Some shots of the interior. I flocked the carpeted areas but my flocking is old and kind of clumpy.

I added some seat belts. Still need to make the buckles.

I mixed up some different colors to make the tan, and used the air brush.

Things were going pretty smoothly and then I snapped the driver side A pillar... knocked a 10mm chunk right out of it. I tried to glue it back but with the interior in it makes the body a little wonky and it wouldn't glue straight.
I am going to go ahead and put the windshield in to give it some support and then glue the chunk back on. I will have to mask off and repaint the A pillar after the repair... I have never ever built a model and had everything go right...

I not going to post pictures of it. I want to see if you guys can tell after I attempt to fix it...

Paint and interior look great.

I put my flocking through a kitchen sifter to keep it fine and fluffy.
