Gotha G-IV 1/72 by Roden with Part PE detail kit.

And the PART photoetch (for a G-V , but it should work with a G-IV).

Sure glad it's open-ended!

I've been studying both sets of instructions the past two days to see how to approach this project.  A lot gets replaced bythe PE.  Even the Roden instructions call for cutting out a portion of the fuselage and replacing with styrene card to accurately depict the G-IV.  Apparently, the sprues were engineered to be good for the entire line of GII, GIII, GIV and GV with minor mods.  There are over 225 pieces of which about 30 are for versions other than the GIV.

Below is the PART PE. Not enough room to cut with PE nippers, but it cuts and bends easily. I highly recommend it.

well you two seem to be going for large and complicated kits...........im going to the other extreme lol

1/72 Hurricane by HobbyBoss

i bought this on a whim ages ago just cos it was cheap, im not really a plane builder any more, always seem to struggle with aircraft

its very nicely moulded.....the wings are one bit and the fuselage is one bit, with the cockpit moulded in,.........in one way its nice cos theres no joins to worry about but it dosnt make for many parts in the box lol

Glad you can join in, Paul.

Started in removing injection points and molded framework from the fuselage.  This allows the PE framework to set in properly.
Before:

After:

The insert:

Then it's getting to work on some PE.
This...

becomes this.

More PE ...

And it's just the beginning.

Paul: That's a very interesting kit. Looking forward to see what you do with it.

Mike: Very cool. You know how I enjoy working with photo etch. I will definitely be on the lookout for Roden here in Japan.

Nice, Paul.  I like the idea of 'just a smear of filler'.  LOL

Cole:  The PE I'm using comes from PART, a Polish company.  I haven't seen any Roden kits that come with PE.

I scraped and sanded off about 26 of the 30 louvers off each side of the nacelles that house the engines.  Roden supplied enough louvers to build any of the GIV's built by 4 different supppliers.

Nice little engines are supplied, but with the closed up nacelles, they're barely visible.  Besides that, they don't fit well inside as other online builders have found.  So, I'm only using the exhaust manifold since it's the only exposed part.  I'll scratch up something for the propeller to mount on later.

With the radiator on the front and the propeller on the rear, it won't be noticeable.

These are the finished nacelles.

There are different lower wingspans, so Roden says to cut the center section.

This is with the wing PE installed.

Roden also says to cut out this rounded out fuselage section and replace it with flat styrene sheet.

The new piece with a window is cut from a template they provide.

But it seems a bit too large.

So I taped everything in place for proper registration/fit.

The final product glued and filled.

Got some paint started on the fuselage.  With all the PE being added to the interior, I figured I'd get color on most of it, install the PE that can't be fitted later, close up the fuselage and fill the seams and finally touch up the color.

The first attempt at pale blue appeared too blue compared to the boxart.  So I mixed it 50/50 with white and came up with an acceptable pale color.  There'll also be some Tamiya white weathering cake rubbed on afterwards.

Before:

After:

With framework and tunnel added:

Thanks for looking,
Mike

Mike; Great progress. The interior is looking very good.

Paul; Sorry to hear about the canopies. Nevertheless, looking forward to your next project.

I finally got started on my flying boat. There will be some significant seams to fill along the fuselage. The cockpit is very basic (that's being kind). I will include the pilot figures just to fill up some of the space.

Tim: Glad to see you joining in.

I'm currently working on two other projects, but have made a wee bit of progress on the flying boat. The yokes will get a coat of flat black. And perhaps, a navigation chart on the table behind the pilots.

Cole....you weren't kidding about a basic cockpit.....lol

Mike, that's quite project with that P/E.

I finally got the itch to get back to the bench.  And maybe it's the IPMS contests I've been to lately that has got me into a plane mood, but I decided to jump into this CB.  I'll do a Tamiya 1/32 Zero.

Some sprue shots......

Tim and 2whl:  Welcome aboard!

Cole: nice work painting 1/72 figures.

Got a little more done on the interior and fuselage.

Tiny molding of the fins on the small bombs is somewhat incomplete, but they'll hardly be seen.  Floor sections and bulkheads are in.

And the fuselage is now together, seams filled and paint touched up.
