A great result for the engine Mike. Lots of details to enjoy.

The engine is looking great Mike, what did you use for the exhaust bluing?

Exhaust blue and orange are from Tamiya'a weathering rub-ons.

I thought as much Mike. Used to have some of that but then it got destroyed in the flood and never got replaced.

I sanded, then sprayed the 'Tub' with Alclad aluminium but it came out like this:

So I clear coated and sprayed the aluminium again:

The engine and trannie so far. Lots of boring satin black but it will get a bit of tarting up before installation:

Looking good Al, and a nice save on the tub. Did you prime and lay down a base coat of semi-gloss black prior to the first coat of Alclad? Alclad makes a water based clear coat that also can be used as a base coat. My experience with it has been mixed.

Thanks both.

Thought I'd have a go at the BMW lettering on the injectors air box but even with the finest Molowtow pen (1mm) I still screwed up. Not wanting to break apart the engine to re-do the black, I masked up and sprayed again:

Then I approached it again with a cunning plan. LOL. I decanted some from 4mm pen and applied it with a fine brush.

I can't say it's brilliant but it will do. Not sure I'm going to attempt the much smaller lettering on one of the cambox covers though.

Nice lettering, Al. If you have some light colored weathering rub-on, it could be used for the cam cover.

Thanks both.

Mike, I might take a couple of brave pills and have at it!! LOL.

For now though the engine and trannie are finished:

It's incredible to think that this 4 cylinder, inline 1.5 litre (90Cid) engine produced 1350bhp in qualifying trim (boost turned right up) and 1000bhp in race trim, (boost lowered) and weighed the same as a Mk1 Mini at just 590kg.

Very nice work, Al.  That's some awesome power from a little thing.

I tried the original decal on the rear wing, but the lettering was yellowed and didn't look right.  So I got new decals from IndyCals.  Much better look.

Also added fuel lines to the injectors that weren't included.  Used fishing monofilament - looks nice but didn't bend easily.  I saw some craft necklaces that looked good for braided hose, so I used those instead of rubber hose.  A good deal at $3 for two 20 inch lengths.

Thanks again for looking,
Mike

Finished decals on the upper body.  They laid down very well considering who was putting them on.

Thanks for looking,
Mike

Super clean job, Cole.

Engine is attached and Niki is in - getting close to the end.

This one went smoothly.  The only problem is that the upper body likes to pop up away from the lower portion.  It's made to be removable to display the engine, but the front pins, that fit into the large recess by the drivers hands, must be squeezed together slightly to put it in, and then pop up due to the tension.

I wish they'd provide decals for the tire lettering, it'd make things easier.  I don't look forward to lettering the 6 wheel Tyrell I have in stash. I goofed up by placing the Marlboro decal directly on the helmet instead of the top of the visor. OOPS!

This is where you can see the slight gap between the upper and lower body sections. If I knew about this beforehand, I would have beveled the pins inward to reduce slippage.

Thanks for looking and for your comments.

Well, I feel an influx of summer mojo, so why not finish off another one.

I got this one at a garage sale some time ago.  Someone had started it by applying the decals as the first step.  Luckily, IndyCals makes a replacement for it.  They claim denser white areas like the Brabham Alfa, so I ordered a set.

No gluing done yet, and it appears to be complete.

I'm contemplating whether to redo these or not.  Some are mispositioned.

Very old, yellow and cracked.

I think you did a mighty fine job on the Brabham Mike.

As for the fit of the cowling to body........ mine was the same. (see post 16)

Good luck with the 312T3.... that's another I have in the stash. I'd definitely strip the decals.

Starting work on the body. I was surprised to discover that 90% of the body will be white.

Finally managed to get a little more done. I added various bits of 'plumbing', including the fuel lines and injectors. (made from copper wire)

The silver lettering will need re-doing now but that can wait until after installation.
