PostSubject: 57 Chev salvage bashup   Mon 12 Jun - 7:50

With 2 projects fresh from a brake fluid bath and awaiting yet another paint attempt, I'm venting my frustration  by turning to the salvage yard.
A baggie  containing most of the parts for a 57 Chev, many of them are prime new plastic.

Will not be using the baggie stock engine but this one from the salvage. Don't know the C.I. but this one has the nice contoured heads and valve covers.

Started on the salvage engine after getting it apart and refinishing some of it, and getting a different blower drive worked out.
Questionable fuel system being imagineered. Kind of a dragster fuel pump/feed being fed into a fuel block made from a 2 banger dual carb manifold. Aggravating my hoarding  instincts, I'm wanting to save those nice headers for some later open engine hot rod and use the stock exhaust manifold one for this. but that wouldn't do any justice for this engine, would it?

(edit) DOH !! I just discovered, posting this foto, that I have routed the dragster fuel pump from a stock fuel pump on the block and on into the fuel block to the carburetors ! Can I just let this slide?

BTW, that dragster fuel pump was made from a salvage distributor.

Nice Clay. The engine is a 409 or a 348 Chevrolet.

Nice. You may not see the original fuel pump once its in the car.

Well, the exhaust dilemma got resolved. The headers wouldn't clear the engine mounts. So, the stock manifold is on.
There was no front end in the baggie, so a front clip was cut from a salvage frame.

Clay, just say the stock pump is the lift pump for the hi pressure one!

Took some butchering, but I got the unknown front clip fitted to the Chev frame with as much lowering as I can..
All I have at the present is the Chevvy hubcap to gauge the ride height. If I want to go lower, I'll have to mess with the  hubs.

Excellent work! I'm the wrong person to ask about the details of engine parts but I can say that the engine looks great, odd fuel pump set up and stock manifold or not. The height of the front wheels looks plenty low based on hubcap placement. Can't wait to see the development.

Well, I didn't think the front would be low enough, so I lowered the front of the body down a bit. I like this better.
It will effect the interior tub,  but with the planned sectioning it would get compromised  any way. It was expected, and I can deal with that. Working on getting the rear end mounting cobbled up. T'won't be pretty.  ( No sewer view)

I like the slotted wheel look on it....gives it that old school look.

Great work! The stance is definitely 'mean' and the tires really give it a feeling of a specific era.

I should know better by now, to even try to fit a tub interior to something I've modded. I have dropped the body some over the frame and wondered if I could shave enough off of the bottom of the glued up interior. This has never worked for me before . This kept getting worse, and I have a mild sectioning yet, planned.
I give up, and will resort to my usual minimal effort interior.

Well. the old plastibater might have made the interior work by using the side panels and locating the front seats on the frame itself  (minimal effort method) eliminating the tub's floorboard entirely.
Now the question is. will the mild section compromise what I have done?
I have another 57 body in the salvage yard that I could do a test section on. This will be a mild  pie cut sectioning following the lower trim line.

That sectioning might compromise EVERYTHING !

Well. ok. I see where this won't work on the current build without a whole lot of doing everything over.... and probably a lot more frustration.
Raising up the bottom edge, even that much, will not work.
The white body is pretty cool, and I'll save it for a future build. It is only tacked together because I don't know what the future project may need to be done.

You never know till you try. Still looking forward to whatever you do to that 57.
