That is looking sharp Cole. Did you do some pre-shading on the upper hull?

Have you tried making your own weathering muds? I buy sample pots of emulsion paints from big DIY stores and mix with builders sand. It's just as good as commercial varieties and MUCH cheaper.

Al; I am trying a new technique to create shading. On the lower hull I primed with oxide red. Then painted with Mr. Color Russian Green 2. For the upper hull, I primed with light grey. Then a coat of Mr. Color Russian Green 1, and a light coat of Mr. Color Russian Green 2 . Lastly, I will weather with AK green pigments, light green filter, and winter streaking grime. My LHS has started carrying copies of The Weathering Magazine. I have picked up a lot of ideas from reading it.

As for making my own mud, I have not. But thanks for the tip!

The turret interior is complete. Now for some weathering. Then it will be on the cast metal tracks, and finally the crew and display base. Why did I not join the upper and lower turret you ask? I have a cunning plan...

Cheers Al.
The first round of weathering. I am relatively new to using AK Interactive products. Although I was using a fine pointed brush, the enamel filters spread out more like a wash. The pigments were a bit better, but I definitely overdid it on the top engine screen. After letting things dry out a bit, I will start round two.

Weathering is looking good to me so far, Cole.

I think it's looking great Cole.

As to the engine mesh..... I think it to looks great. Don't forget, the Russian winters during WWII were VERY fierce and exacted a great toll on mechanical machinery!!

Thanks Mike and Al.
The upper hull has undergone another round of weathering. The figures have been assembled. I may have jumped the gun with the figure holding his helmet. As it is, I can't place him standing up in the turret. So I'm looking at some alternate placements. Now to bring them to life. Master Box did a fine job creating the faces.

Great selection of figures you have there.

First round of painting the tank crew. Round two will be adding details and highlights. I'm still undecided on the final placement of the figures.

Friul of Hungary does a fine job of making these metal tracks. The design makes it very easy to line up and assemble them correctly. Although the instructions call for drilling out the holes with a 0.4 mm drill bit, it is only required for cleaning up the holes. Burrs on the tracks are minimal and easy to remove. The links are held in place with wire that comes with the kit. One set down, one to go.

Very nice, the way they conform to the wheels.

The second set of tracks is complete. Next will be treating the tracks with AK 159 Metal Burnishing. It seems straightforward enough, but there is some confusion. The instructions on the bottle tell you to clean the tracks with acetone and let dry completely. The AK website pdf and video make no mention of using acetone. I would rather avoid using acetone if at all possible. If anyone can shed some light on this I would be most appreciative.

Well, at long last, the tracks are complete and installed on the T-34. Also, they have received an initial coating of soil/mud. Now it's on to making a simple display and finally finishing things up.

Those tracks look terrific Cole, particularly with the weathering.
