PostSubject: 1965 Ford Mustang AMT 1/16 Scale   Thu 13 Apr 2017, 9:49 am

Ok, weather is good so time to make a start on yet another build. The large scale certainly opens the way for extra details but I think the kit itself leaves a lot to be desired. Anyway I plan on gloss yellow with black vinyl stripes.

The A pillars on the doors don't quite line up right but a bit of bending and filing and It's a good fit.

A couple of dents and notches filled in just nicely.

I've decided to put the rear and front valences on now so I can strengthen them with CA gel as they are a very loose fit. I've lined them up with the bumpers perfectly and hope they don't get in the way when it comes to putting the body on.

I made a couple of tabs from sprue to help with the fit and now I can file it level with the rest of the bodywork.

Id like to try out a very large scale kit sometime....just to see how much added detail I can put into one.

Often larger scale kits are just scaled up versions of 1:24/1:25 versions with scaled up 'problems' and no extra detailing.

Good start D.

BTW, I tried that Perfect Plastic Putty and it's brilliant. Thanks for passing on.

Large scale kits have their good and bad points. Mostly I've been disappointed in the lack of detail considering their big size. Also, with so much more body area to paint, getting a great paint job can be a challenge. Wish you well taming that Mustang!

Here's one I built with my Dad when I was very young. I think he actually did most of the building, I'm lucky he and the model are still around.

Best of luck Mr H, nice to see one being built.

That looks great Shay and thanks. I was hoping that the badges would have been seperate pieces. I've already taken the 'FORD' off the bonnet to make way for the vinyl and was hoping that somewhere there was a PE set or something but I can find nothing in this scale. I did try to carefully remove them with a mind to putting them back on but my blade skills weren't up to the task. I'll have to think on this a while.

I have used these Daisuke, they are very well made and very 'crisp'. The shop is worth a look in general.

Hello all. I've grey primed the bodywork, smoothed it flat and got the super fine white primer put down.

I've masked off the engine bay as I'll be painting this part by the brush.

Next day, three coats of gloss yellow. It needs a little polish but it went on very well *phew*

We're getting there.

I'm looking forward to this kit as I've never done a large scale before.

Thanks. I love the look of cars from this era whether is be US, Japanese or European. I've just had a good look at the parts included and I have to scratch build a shed load of parts. I wish I had Katz' motivation and skills in this department.

Great colour, some opportunity for extra detail in that engine bay my friend.

Is that rattle can Mr H?

It comes with plug leads, or least it used to. They were a bit big though.

Sure is. I'm a 100% rattle user.

There are leads with the kit but I will probably use my own materials for the job. I also need to scratch build a few things. The biggest horror is that it uses a front metal axle which goes right through the oil pan. I'll have to deal with that issue.

LOL, I forgot about that axle, I just had a look at my one and it's not really as bad as it sounds, very little is visible when it's finished, especially if you paint it black.

Having said that you don't really need it anyway, just pin the wheels to the suspension even using cut down pieces of the axle and fill the holes in the sump.

I'm sure it'll be gorgeous.

Great paint! One question: is this a RHD Mustang? The moulded windscreen wipers are for RHD.
Or are the pics reversed?

No the image is not flipped and it is LHD. The box art has them the correct way around. Well spotted sir. I don't know why this is. If only they bothered to make them a seperate piece.

I just didn't notice.

The paint looks fantastic! And I wish you the best with the scratch building - the only advice I can offer is to remember to take a step back from time to time to allow some de-stress, the same as with any task that requires a lot of concentration, I guess. I often de-stress by hanging out with my cat, she's very grounded, lol.
