PostSubject: 1958 Chevrolet Convertible   Thu 16 Feb 2017, 5:45 pm

Back to the WIP box, I pulled this one out so I've got a WIP going on the site.  It's an old 1958 Chevrolet Impala Coupe that I hacked the top off years ago.  Since then, I've gotten better tires my LHS closing sale, a Modelhaus convertible boot (that doesn't seem quite right), and a Model Car Garage PE ugrade set.  Also planned is a way to duplicate the tricolor inserts for the seats.

I was originally going to leave material on the windshield trim so I could sculpt visors, but it proved too much of a hassle.  They'll be added afterwards.

Aftermarket tires replaced the AMT ones which were very thin whitewalls.  And they were $5 !

Here are the PE goodies.

The wheel cover chrome was very rippled and had to be stripped and replaced with Alclad.

Since I was doing the wheelcovers, I sanded offf the nasty seam lines that seam to be on all the outer edges of the bumpers and redid them.

Some engine assembly had been done.

These are the two boots I had in mind.  The upper one is a Modelhaus resin piece that runs way over the trunk lid.  The lower one is from a '59 Impala and doesn't fit quite well.  I may use one of them as a mold for my own resin boot.

Thanks for looking,
Mike

Shop went out of business over a year ago. That's how long this one's been sitting around topless. Sure miss that hobby shop, though.

Still pondering over the color scheme. Maybe blue - in and out.

Oh, the engine in the kit is actually a 348, not a 409, so the valve covers are engine color, Chevy engine orange.

It's looking good Mike. You did a great job on re-finishing the Sombrero's.

Decided on a color combo.  Blues.  Got the seats painted with an original seat insert scheme.  Flocked the floor in sky blue.  BMF'd the seat trim.  Have to scratch the rear add-ons for the convertible irons storage.  PE air vents and pedals.

Also got the motor pretty much finished.  Very nice wire looms came with the PE kit.

Nice motor Mike but that interior is strikingly done!

That is looking nice Mike...very adventurous cutting the top off for a convertible build. I am yet to try flocking on interiors..maybe someday..?

Beautiful work! The texture and colour of the seats is really cool, though the combo makes my eyes water after a bit of staring, lol. Love the motor as well

Yeah, the photograph makes it look more irridescent than it really is. Everything is quite pastel in real life. LOL

Valve covers do look better in orange. They were so bland anyway, in effect highlighting them in silver only made them stand out in their blandness more. Seat colors . . . a matter of taste. The p.e parts improve models, but price and difficulty sometimes in trimming from the sheet and mounting them with tweezers and glue can be a real pain. Your work makes it look better than box stock for certain!

Sprayed the body with a Dupli-Color Light Sapphire Blue Metallic.  I'm going to have to stare at this for awhile since I think it looks too dark for the interior colors.  In the meantime, I'll look for a lighter blue or just go with another white car.
