Some of you may remember the buddy build concept I did with my friend Derek.  We started off building the same kit, but got sidetracked with finishing off other builds we had started.  This year we decided to get back to the same subject concept.  Not quite the same kit, but close enough.  We are both building a Model Factory Hiro 1/12th Porsche 917 Longtail.  He decided on the 1971 car and I will do a 1970 car.  I'll be doing car #25.

Box and contents.

We both started off at step #1.  Being a MFH kit, there is a lot of clean-up and trial fitting.  I got all of the cylinder pieces cleaned up and ready to be painted.

The "long tail" version body is different from the regular mass marketed Heller kit reissued a number of times. I wish the low volume kits with plastic, gunmetal and frequently p.e. parts weren't so darned expensive. Add that parts often need "cleaning up" of flash and fit issues can be common. In short, I hope the long tail will be a success. I luv the sports cars!

Thanks guys

I hope I don't bore you with the slow progress, but these kits have a lot of fitting and drilling that needs to be done to them.  Like I said, we intend this to be true to the 'buddy-build' idea, and we decided to work on them only when we meet-up together. Since this is his first MFH kit, Derek is realizing how much work we are going to have to put into these, so he suggested another nite together. Not really much to show.  The cylinders are three pieces each.  Got all of the pieces cleaned up and CA'd together.

I also got all of the holes drilled into the resin engine block.  Then the rear trans pieces were dry fit into place.

I got the top of the heads assembled and dry fit it all up for some inspiration.

I hope you can position the engine cover to allow all that work to be seen and enjoyed. Great stuff!

Seeing your hand in a foto shows how big the finished model will be. Take your time and enjoy it and the challenge it is!

Thanks guys.

Gary, the engine cover hinges up and has a factory hood prop.

This build session was mostly drilling holes.  48 holes for the ignition wires and another 48 for the fuel lines.

I got the main parts of the fuel distributor glues together.

For something this involved I would expect that slow progress is the norm, just looking at all those parts makes my eyes cross, lol.

Thanks for looking guys.   Slow but steady progress.   I spent this session working on the frosted parts.  Cleaning seams and drilling holes. Of course I had to test fit the sub-assembly for some inspiration.

Then I tried out the fuel line and fitting to see how it would look.

Fan shroud and fan cleaned up.

I also got some color on the block and heads.  Testor's Metalizer Titanium.

Thanks guys.  I hope you're enjoying this.   Tonight I jigged up the painted pieces to see how everything was lining up. I checked the alignment of the intakes and the fan shroud.  The shroud will need some tweaking because the holes don't quite line up with the intakes on the head.

I cleaned up the exhaust pipes and did a trial fit on those pieces.

I also finished off the injection pump.

What's not to enjoy Paul...... bring it on.

At GBP600 (USD750) in the UK, I could never justify buying one though.

Very nice Paul.

From memory, those frosted parts look a bit like yellow plastic on the real thing, I don't know what they're actually made from, but how will you paint them?

They were made from fiberglass, much like the whole body but they had more resin and less glass fibers and were not painted hence the translucent amber color.

Mitch has it nailed. The fresh parts are very clear and as the resin ages they get slowly more yellow/orange.
