PostSubject: 1973 Mach 1 Mustang   Tue 25 Oct 2016, 1:43 pm

My big build is done and I am starting to get back to the bench.

To get me going again I am going to use the newly release 73 Mach 1 kit to build a model of my uncle's car.

I am using Keith Marks decals as the kit decals are no where near correct.

Just a few mods, changing the transmission into a C6 automatic, filling in huge pin marks in the interior tub, redoing the drip rails and adding a piece of trim and the vinyl top. And trying to make the sad MPC chassis look more like a Mustang under the hood. Here is a 69 Mustang that has the same exact chassis plate in that kit too. Not very Mustangesque under the hood...

Nice one, Mitch. I'll be watching closely, as I just stripped down an old build of the MPC '71 Mach 1.

Excellent start. I'll keep an eye on this one and maybe pick some ideas and techniques up from you.

Is that blue painter's tape for the vinyl roof?  If so, do you put any adhesive on the body first?  It sure looks real enuf!  Best of luck, I did a '72 back in the day. remarkable drip rail trim work, WOW!

Thanks, yes that's painters tape. I have never done a vinyl top before but I've seen others do it. I am going to put a little very thin super glue along the edges.

After looking at the reference pictures some more I realized that AMT/MPC left a lot to be desired off of the body too.

So using Plastruct stock I am making the window frames, and some clear to make the quarter windows.

I also didn't like my scratch inner fenders so I went to the parts box and found some spring towers and some much more realistic lower control arms and strut rods... so this is going to take a few more days before its in primer

This is the stance I am going after. The wheels were sourced from the AMT 63 Chevy kit.

Excellent modding! The bay is so much better and the roof stance is spot on!

So much work on inner fender wells/shock towers. I wonder if there wasn't a way of substituting something from a similar doner frame. Wish u well, don't get burned out on detail, as baseball's Chicago Cubs manager says, "Don't let the pressure exceed the pleasure."

I appreciate you guys thinking I have scratch building skills but the lower A arms and the molded spring towers are from the parts box. I am just grafting them onto the sad little MPC chassis plate.
I think they are from the leftovers of the 65 Restomod Stang I did.

I grafted the 1999 Cobra front chassis to the 65 chassis plate.

The grafting job of the '99 front chassis to the '65 is great! And it's even more cool that you were able to utilize the leftovers for this current build

Thanks for all the nice words,

Here is some progress I made this weekend. The decals smeared on me so I took them off and reordered a set.
