My technique for batteries. I paint the cell caps in orange/yellow/whatever and the terminals in silver. Let dry well- over night to be on the safe side. Then a very watery wash of satin black on the top. No need to get too close to the terminals or caps, let the wash flow up to them.
No matter if its thin over the rest of the battery top, as long as you get good coverage around the caps and terminals.
Any thin spots can be touched up with undiluted satin black. I use a more glossy black to simulate the battery hold downs.
