PostSubject: Thinking seriously about getting a wheelchair...   Wed 20 Jul 2016, 8:47 pm

I can walk but...my sense of balance was destroyed with my last stroke and walking more than two paces means having a 'wobbly!'
I would like more independance and to get out and about, which is not possible at the moment. The next P.I.P. payment I get I may very well treat myself to a chair.

Course I want a six wheel V12 chair with chromatic blue paint with ghost flames.

Seriously though I need something as I cant even walk to the road and that would take about 5 seconds.....

Last Saturday I spent the morning helping my wheelchair-bound friend finish a rough-in doorway at the place where he works . . . a business that sells wheelchairs of all kinds. Coincidence? BTW, here in my suburb, there are numerous folks who get around (to town, stores, neighbors) in their electric wheelchairs. As my friend has said, getting good exercise is important, and getting around is part of living. Best to you in whatever choice you make.

Don't know if you get 'Motability' Nige, but there is an awesome 4WD chair made by Magicmobility in Australia. Its available here from All Terrain Wheelchairs.

IT will help indeed as I just cant walk too far even with a cane,my lower spine is shagged too so I lose either way! example, when I get a grocery delivery it is a battle to A get the frozen stuff away B get the referigated stuff away by then I need to sit down due to the pain level! once recovered enough I can put everything else away..

It would be nice to even get into the (communal) garden but there is nowhere to sit! so even having a smoke is a no-no.........

You should get some advice from a good retailer Nige, and get some seating sorted in the garden area!

What ever you get it has to be blinged out and have a custom paint job.

Nigel. I'm no expert, but I'd be concerned about loss of muscle tone- the old 'use it or loose it' syndrome. Or are you not going to use it full time?

Part time and to be honest I have no choice as my balance is so bad...It will mean more freedom for me.

Getting out and about, seeing things and social interactions are important. Using available muscles to keep up upper body strength and flexibility are important too. Here in the U.S. there are vids (probably on the Net too) on "sit and be fit." Best to you in your searches!

Go for it Nige, make life easy for yourself. You only get one of those.

We've just bought Justine one of these as she too has severe mobility problems since her stroke.
