PostSubject: End of a chapter   Wed 20 Jul 2016, 10:14 am

As you have noticed there has been a distinct lack of progress on the voyager. Many of you know (through my interview with Al), that my son Stephen (Stevie) suffered a catastrophic head injury in 2009 which led to a complete brain decompensation through a slow bleed in June 2010.

This left Stevie profoundly disabled with very brittle epilepsy and requiring 24 high quality care. I decided (not least because to buy in the care would cost around a hundred thousand pounds a year) to give up my business and take on this duty myself. This of course had a massive impact on the families quality of life and cultivated a huge struggle which has now lasted six years.

I would like to thank everyone who expressed empathy and support after Al's interview and the ongoing comments of support within everyday threads. Running alongside the financial struggle for the family and the physical and mental demands of providing such a level of care with little assistance has of course been litigation in respect of the injury, for which Stevie bore no responsibility.

I spent yesterday morning with Stevie's QC and barrister at their chambers in a meeting with the 'other side', or more accurately their insurers, and we managed to settle the claim. We obtained a relatively high seven figure sum for Stevie which will now enable him, as well as employing me on a proper footing, to buy in specialised care to enable us all to regain a better quality of life. I know he will be particularly pleased about this as I'm sure he is sick of seeing my ugly mug 24 hours a day.

During this ordeal, or a least for a large part of it, I have rekindled my boyhood love of scale modelling and known many of you since 2011/12 on escale. In 2014 I joined Skid's Place and felt immediately at home as most of the guys here I knew already. It is no small thing when I say that the comradeship and support I have received here, not to mention the entertainment and enjoyment, have played an important part in my still being here to write this post. I have been in some very dark places over the past six years and without the outlet of this hobby and to a much larger degree the company of this forum, I can honestly say that I would have struggled to carry on.

As this very difficult and traumatic chapter closes, and although the care of course is ongoing, I want to give a heartfelt THANKYOU to everyone on this forum for helping, however inadvertently, me through and providing me with an emotional crutch without which we would never have had "THE AFFAIR AT NERY', GUY GIBSON, GEORGE, and the other models I have managed to make. I look forward to many more years here.

Guys

Gary, since I missed your 'interrogation' by Al, I had no idea. I have to admire your courage and
dedication.

Man that is great news to hear Gary on this miserable summer morning and I am so glad you got the settlement you so much deserve. It must be such a relief.

I sincerely hope that the settlement will at least enable you to afford a little respite for yourself as that is just as important to you as your care for Stevie is to him.

I also thank you for your thanks to Skid's Place and it's member's even though they are not needed.

Well done for sticking by Stevie through what must have been and will no doubt continue to be hard times.

I have to go out in the pouring rain now but I can now do so with a much lighter heart.

Take care Gary.

Gary....I am very happy to hear things are looking up for you. Your work and help has been outstanding for the time i have dealt with you here...a true brother of the plastic. It takes a big man to put ones own needs aside for any others in any situation. Times will be tough but some will be better my friend...hang in there.

Gary, I had no idea. So sorry to learn of this family tragedy. But glad to hear of a new beginning and lease on life.
I am glad you are still around to share your wonderful builds and positive out look with us. I must thank you for the encouragement and support on my builds over the past number of years. Life is a cruel and wonderous mystery, how we deal with misfortune helps defines us.
Build on Gary, build on.

Well that is some great news scruffbag ...... I am so happy for you and Stevie .

Things will hopefully get a little easier for you now, this will obviously have a positive effect on Stevie too as I'm sure he'll sense any time you're at a bit of a low yourself and that will obviously affect his general emotive state at the time.

A lot of people don't realise how difficult and draining it is to be a full time carer, whether it be physical or mental health issues, ..... i do, although not to the extent of Stevie's medical needs being both physical and mental.

Money doesn't solve everything but it sure makes it a whole lot bloody easier for unsung heroes like yourself ...

It's good to hear Stevie will be getting professional care. It will ease your burden and give you back some of your life.

Curt, very kind and moving words, thank you so much.

Colin, thank you, its true it can be difficult, yet also hugely rewarding. I completely agree about the money. It will increase Stevie's quality of life considerably. (and the whole family's)

Mike, it does mean I can buy in qualified nurses and will be far more comfortable leaving him, possibly even overnight

Well I think you should have a special birthday party for him,  maybe a few local members of the forum could pop by and say hello.
I'd be up for that depending on what decision we make for the immediate future and how far off the grid we are.

Of course it's up to him to foot the bill now he's a rich man lol

Beautifully written story. Caregivers too are always stressed, particularly when a close family member needs the 24/7 care. I am happy you've struggled through as you said, some very dark days. Here's to many better ones now that one major step is completed.

Gary: I'm so happy for you and your son. When I first opened this thread I said to myself "Oh no, Gary is going to give it up." I knew just how much you being gone would lessen the group. On top of being an absolutely exceptional artist and modeler you are a genuinely good person. You being gone would have left a huge hole.

I let out a cheer for both your son, for you, and for us as I digested the news. It is a real relief to know you that you will get a rest from full time health care. For several weeks I provided care for my wife so I have just a taste of what you have been doing. The strain is unbelievable. Only a truly strong person would be able to have performed your duties for six years. Gary, you have my utmost respect both as a modeler/artist and as a person.

Good luck my friend. Time to get back on our projects.

Your son will continue to be in our prayers.

John

Colin, anytime you or anyone wants to pay us a visit you are truly welcome. Just let me know if your ever near Bolton and Ill give you the address. Im sure Stevie will stand you a couple of beers, and I would love to meet up.

H, kind words and much appreciated. You are of course right that this is a big step forward in getting Steive some quality of life back.

Shay, thank you my friend, please send our love and best wishes to your Mum. And keep soldiering on.

Mark, thanks for the best wishes and kindest regards to you and your family.

John, I think Ive been bitten to deep by the 'bug' to give up now lol. Your kind words are heartwarming and nearly enough to get me back to the dreaded Voyager. Your complements are much appreciated and reciprocated in full.
I can't thank you enough for the empathy and support and we wish you and you family all the very best. Please pass on our love to you wife in particular and I hope she is well on the way to a full recovery. (the same obviously goes for you). You are right of course that we must move forward and concentrate again on our marvellous and absorbing hobby. "Viva Ruth's Place"
