OK.... I did a lot of research and found that this class of tugboat were indeed built during WWII.

See HERE and HERE

So I'm pretty certain I can proceed with this build, unless our CB leader says otherwise.

That being the case, is anyone else going to participate? as I don't really see the point of being the only one.

well, technically she was involved in the war.....but i bet it wasnt in those fancy colours lol

found this out about her

Superstructure rebuilt in 1925 to increase the enclosed passenger accommodation - to the detriment of her draught and speed
Wrecked during World War II, twice hit by bombs in separate air raids over Cologne in 1942
Sunk by bombs in Oberwinter harbour in March 1945 while in use as accommodation for Russian war prisoners, resulting in 21 deaths
Raised unsuccessfully in 1949 but made watertight by the welding on of the stern section of the steamer Ostmark

I think that both qualify. At the beginning of WWII many countries could not build new ships fast enough so they refitted anything that they could get their hands on that floated. Since Nigels history obviously backs this up, it qualifies. Harbour tugs were used to get all the large freighters that were feeding the war machine in line for the convoys before they left harbour. Most were equipped with light guns even. So Al is in.

Hey, why not retitle this CB:  "The most unlikely ships that come to mind when you say WWII Ships"

If it's allowed, I'll stretch the definition a bit and join in with this one.  It saw WWII service in Scapa Flow, Scotland as a training vessel and, after being bombed by JU-88's, was run aground and continued the war as an anti-aircraft platform.

I do intend to build it OOB, though.

This build reminds me of one I did long ago.  It was a good kit, a German "Q" ship, a merchant ship with guns hidden below deck to attack other ships. It likely was The Atlantis.  The hull had small working sliding doors to expose the guns for firing.  I wish I still had that one!
Good luck all on a beautiful variety of ships!  I thought this build would be "battleship grey dull," but it looks to be a winner!

Welcome 'aboard shipmates!!

OK.... I'll 'shove off'!!!

This kit, according to Scalemates dates back to 1956 with no apparent 'upgrades' or re-tooling since, apart from change of decalsl!!!

So as you might expect, outright quality is not it's strong point and there are some fit issues. That said, the hull is in one piece and the deck was a cinch to fit.

On the deck, both fore and aft, were some horrible molded in ropes, which just had to go:

Half an hour of careful sanding and they are history:

The wheelhouse was up next and oddly, there is no glazing in this kit at all. So at the moment, the roofs and front aren't glued in until I make some from clear acetate:

This is how she stands at the moment. The wheelhouse section will be raised about 2 cm when the deck accomodation goes in:

I'm tempted to weather it some but since it's my first ship/boat, I probably won't.

I'll will however, probably mount it on some timbers rather than the ill fitting stands supplied in the kit.

The front isn't glued in yet Nigel.

Got the 'glass' cut from thin clear acetate:
