PostSubject: Aoshima Skyline R34 Nismo   Sun 03 Apr 2016, 3:42 pm

After the Citroen 15CV, I feel in the mood for a nice simple and quick build. Normally for me that means curbside and Tamiya but this time it's curbside and Aoshima.

Several reports I have seen on this kit seem to show that the builder had problems fitting the front end, so that's where I started, Needn't have worried as I found no problems at all:

We're being spoiled .... There's GTRs a plenty showing up ...

That's a nice silver you got laid down there Al .... Rattle can or airbrush????

Are you decaling it as per the box art or going your own way?

Thanks Colin.

The silver is rattle can cleared with rattle can Promatic clear over the decals.

Nismo planned to build 20 R34 Z Tune Nimos Skyline GT-R's. All after Nissan stopped making them. It was done to celebrate 20 years of Nismo. In they end they built 19 plus 2 prototypes.

2.8 litre, full time AWD 6 cylinder, twin turbo lump, putting out 500bhp!!! and pulling 8000rpm. 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Top speed of 203 mph plus.

Interestingly, after Nissan had given Nismo permission to build the Z tunes, all of them were built on second hand R34 GT-R V·spec Skylines, all with less than 18,000 miles on them and all of them were sprayed 'Z Tune' silver. 1-12 were purchased by Nismo while 13-19 were Nismos customer cars converted to Z Tune spec.

There is one for sale at the mo if anyone fancies it at THE LOWDOWN Mind you you are going to need deep pocket at offers in excess £400,000. Thats the cost of a Ferrari 458 and a McLaren 650S.

As for the decals, the real car had none as far as I can ascertain. So I'm using just what you see.

Lovely silver you have there Al. Never had much luck with silver myself but you got it down to a tee.

Looking forward to the end result

Thanks guy.

Ash..... silver can be a bear to work with as, most are quite coarse in comparison to other metallics. As always, I think the secret is in preparation. I always sand back with 4000 or so grit after the first coat, in between coats and with 8000 grit after the last coat. Then clear coat.

HTH

I understand you can wet sand metallics as you apply them Al, but never knew you could to it to the final coat before clearing.
You learn something new everyday.
If I could remember all these new things I learned everyday for the last 40 years, I'd be rich. Probably..LOL

Perhaps I should clarify a little.

I'm not taking about sanding back as you would do in polishing paint but rather just 'knocking back' the gritty high spots a little.

No Shay, just a very light touch to knock the tops of the gritty bits.
