PostSubject: Revell 1/24 VW Samba Bus   Tue 02 Feb 2016, 8:14 pm

HI all my next bit of light relief after the Citroen
this kit has really strange build order in that the body is built round the interior which is ok if you're spraying it normally but the paint job I intend will have some feathering so I need to make sure it will all line up correctly when put together so( I'm hoping this will work ok) I've tacked all the body together so I can spray the body as a whole, thus making sure it will all line up. I will be trying a couple firsts on this kit Alclad 2 and candy colours so wish me luck.

This build looks interesting. I will be following.

What is your method of tacking it together?

I prime everything then use tiny drops if CA glue. When I have to take it apart the CA pulls the primer off the plastic, leaving me with only a very tiny area to clean up.

Nice project. Like those 23 window buses, especially with the ragtop. I have this kit, so I will be watching.

If you had a real one in good shape, they go for real big money!!

Hi all well here is tonights update, to all you Alclad 2 experts out there whats hapening here (it looks more like matt silver than chrome and it rubs off with your fingers) (the few small areas which do look like chrome are hard and dont seem to rub off) I used their black microfiller primer then their gloss black base coat then used the Chrome, do I need to give a second coat of the chrome or what?

Looking very good. A friend of mine just recently finished this one in two tone metallic green and black and fitted out the back with a floor and tv.

I am by no means an "expert" when using Alclad, only used it a couple times until switching the Spaz Stix.
From the results it looks like one of a number of things or a combinations of them. Too high of pressure, too many coats too close with the ab, or the base coat not cured completely.

Alcad rubs off very easily. They do make a "Special Sealer" that prevents that from happening. Alcad Chrome is like a transparent Silver or a Kandy Silver. It needs to be applied at very low pressure (12 or 15 PSI) and in very thin coats. You need to be able to see the Black Base Coat for it to work and look right. To much paint and it's just Silver paint. I hope this helps.

As above, too much paint and too close to the area your spraying

HI all, ok so I sorted the chrome out but putting the candy colour over the top seems to have changed the chrome effect (I think in a quite pleasing way) I'm going to do a couple more coats of the cherry red candy then remove the masking then mask up the cherry red and do the chrome and then (cant decide on orange or emerald green candy on the top) personally I'm looking forward to see how it looks, I think It may be better than I visualized originally.

I haven't checked lately, but there are both good videos on Y.T. and sites that specifically give directions on using Alclad.

Hi all well here is a tiny update I think I've hidden the damage from the masking fluid with a couple of strategically placed hippy flowers

Nice re"covery" with the flowers. Too bad about the paint. Keep up the progress.
