Tamiya 1:35 kit which I will do as a Leichte Division 999 vehicle during the campaign for Italy in 1943.

The kit is absolutely super, with no fit issues whatsoever (in fact it has the best fit I have ever come across), no flash at all, VERY light parting lines and no injection pin marks.

The basic 'wagen put together:

Primed and painted with as near as I have to the colour it would leave the factory in:

This was followed with a coat of hair lacquer:

Next up with be spraying with Tamiya flat Desert Yellow followed by the chipping.

Sprayed it Desert Yellow and now on to the 'chipping' stage:

The chipping is really going well. Very believable.

Thanks guys, this sort of stuff is real fun to do.

All the chipping on the main bodywork is done. Next up will be the same on the interior.

Nice job Al

Have you been using a scalpel end and similar or coarse sand paper for the chipping effect?

As an extra ... if you paint the edges and raised surfaces of the body work gunmetal/silver before you do the first "primer" coat then when you're chipping you can, if you want, go a little further/deeper and reveal some "bare metal"

Thanks Colin and thanks too for the 'bare metal' tip too.     I'll need to remember that one.

Been using a combination of new pan scourer, a cocktail stick cut to a chisel point and an old cheap and stiff brush.

The scourer I use for broad areas, the brush for tight areas and the cocktail stick for detail stuff.

But the real trick is to work in small areas at a time, give them a 3/4 minute soak in water with a little washing up liquid added (to stop the water simply running off) and work slowly. It's all too easy to overdo the effect.

Some standard articles then ... and yes it is too easy to over do it as i've sadly learnt from experience ha ha ha.

I've taken to softening the top layer with steam from the kettle .....

I never thought about adding washing up liquid  .... duuuurrr ..... me a geeky git too, and i do that with so many other techniques.... thats stored for future use mate ta!!

Looks very realistic Skid. Nice work on this.

As an air-cooled VW fanatic, I love Kubels (and it's water-borne version the Schwimmenwagen). The Thing was just the later civilian version of this vehicle, and are actually quite valuable in the US. I sometimes see a few at the VW car shows.

Great weathering and wear patterns, Al.

Only suggestion is dirty up the shovel a bit.

Neat!! Chipping method, borrowed from military modelers, is great for us too. When it comes to weathering, whether paint rubbed off, faded by the sun, or rusted out, the technique is nothing short of great for us. We used to exclusively do all models as "new" but weathering is just so much more realistic. I bet the metal got hot in the desert sun!
