PostSubject: In the sandbox.........   Sun 01 Nov 2015, 1:29 pm

i picked this lot up in a sale in Boyes ages ago and thought it would be good to try and use them for a dio GB elsewhere
im not sure in what direction its going to go at the moment, possibly the WMIK and Jackal and a few of the troops watching over the quads crossing a ravine, or perhaps the Rover broken down. i dont plan on anything elaborate since im crap at doing dio bases
scale is strange to me, not sure how im going to get on with 1/48 vehicles, first time working with them in this scale

I've got the twin landrover set next on the bench (when i find time from real life)

Looks good, nice sprues etc.

I think you'll crack the dio base mate ... not as hard as it first seems to be honest

The 1/48 scale is different, not small as 1/72 nor so large as 1/35.  Odd, it seems but there are planes in that scale and other things.  Will really enjoy a dio with some of the kits and men.  Should be one excellent project!

Looking forward to this one Paul. 1:48 is a great scale, compact but with plenty of details.

Land Rovers don't break down Paul..... they're British don't you know old boy!!! LOL

its the fact that both Rovers come with alternative bonnets.....1 for down, 1 for up with a stay, and you get engines.......and one of the guys is a leaning over, peering in type pose lol

1/48 is a very much accepted scale for aircraft....traditionally it was more popular in america than 1/72....where as everywhere else was 1/72, but its more balanced now

its catching on as an armour scale cos of japan.........the subjects are smaller but still have detail and dont take up as much room to display which is a consideration to be made in their homes of course

Hi Paul,

If you could scratch up a couple of tents, you could have them out on a long patrol and just spent the night out, then the chap with is head under the bonnet could be doing his di, before heading out...

Just a passing thought...

Andy... popcorn

after a week on night shifts ive finally found the enthusiasm to make a start

an afternoons work results in 2 quads nearly finished, 2 trailers needing wheels and the main part of the Jackel done

hope to make a start on the Rover tomorrow

ive also got the figure together, ive made them all just not sure which ones i will be using

they are a bit of small, im used to 1/35!.....would have been nice if Airfix had made a driver and a gunner for the Jackel or WMIK

im struggling with the juggling on this lot.........i dont like having two kits on the go, ive now got 2 x quads/trailers, 1 x WMIK, 1 x Jackal and a gaggle of troops!!!! lol........even harder when everything is the same colour!.....not even thought about the base yet!

ive painted everything since i figure im not going to be able to paint them when assembled, this way i can just touch things up

from left to right
2 quads + trailers then the WMIK then the Jackal

for those not familiar with BritMil vehicles, the WMIK is a version of the military Land Rover....think stripped out, strengthened, add roll cages and pile on the heavy weaponry......used for recon and fire support
the Jackal is a 4x4 patrol/recon fire support vehicle (there is a 6x6 version too)

i am still working away at this.....slow going when its a couple of things at once lol

im impressed how detailed these kits are, and surprised just how many bits are in the boxes!

the jackal and rover are nearing completion.....looking forward to doing all the touching up and moving on to the figures

pretty much together, im just playing around with washes trying to find one that works for me

ive started the base, dio's are not my thing at all so keeping this simple

two slabs of polystyrene glued together, made a gully at one end which will be crossed by one of the quads

lots of pva and covered in kiln dried sand

Great base work Paul, like the fact that you've used real sand too.

a little while i go i was at work and walking down to our stores building, which is about 5 minutes walk away from the factory........another place had been having some work done including rebricking the car park and there was a skip at the side of the road with all the left over rubbish in...........on top was a few unopened bags of kiln dried sand (which is hell of a waste in my book)......so when i got to stores i blagged a plastic bag and on the way back 'borrowed' some of the sand lol lol

the thing with kiln dried sand is that its very small uniform sized grains and if the bags not open its bone dry (cos it needs to be to do the block paving)

knew it would come in useful

Figures are still a black art to me too Paul, particularly faces.

They will still look good in the dio. though.
