PostSubject: Datsun 240ZG Full Works   Tue 27 Oct 2015, 8:04 am

This series of cars was quite popular when I was in high school and during my time in the service. A straightforward kit, but with some design ideas I cannot quite fathom. It has the makings of an engine, but is missing the coil, distributor, and alternator. Also, the hood/bonnet doesn't open up. It has the option to be built basically stock, with right or left hand drive. And it offers an aerodynamics package. The decals are very big. I know it will be interesting to see how they go on the hood, roof, and hatchback.

I'm building this to place in a diorama. The diorama itself is a stand alone kit. I will be able to place any 1:24 or 1:25 car in the garage after it's complete. But this model will allow me to place the engine on a stand, and various parts on the garage floor.

I used to have a 1:1 of this car back in 1976. Only we called it a Datsun 240Z. 140MPH top end and acceleration to match.

I built a version of this kit a few years ago, only mine came with a twin cam engine.

Mine too. Room for the engine but no engine mounts. Mine came with an engine stand so I built the engine and display it alongside the car.

Good luck with it Cole.

It must be good to be the King. Cheers for that Al.

Here are those big one piece decals I was referring to.

The rear spoiler has been attached and blended in. The stock bumpers apparently remain in place. Now it's time for some primer.

The box art o your kit differs to mine Cole BUT the decals sheet is exactly the same.

I don't want to put a damper on things but the huge bonnet decal on my sheet simply broke up and quickly became unuseable.

Hope you use yours.

Body additions are really nice.  They remind me of the import "Entex" kits of long ago.  I have a couple Toyota Celicas with similar body work.  The 1/25 Revell Datsun 240Z kit is excellent in detail.  It was first issued back in the '70s in 2 forms, one stock with that big air cleaner and the other with racing parts as the BRE (Brock Racing Enterprises) 240Z.  Neither, however came with the big wheel extensions.  Good luck with this one.
If memory serves, can't old decals be held together with a spray coat of clear lacquer first?  Maybe it was petroleum based clear enamel?

I like it Cole. The original 240Z has always been one of my favorite sports cars. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Thanks for the heads up Al. Unlike some other decal sheets in the stash(PEUGEOT 405T16GR, FORD ESCORT RS COSWORTH ULSTER, CIRCUIT WOLF BMW 3.0 CSL) these look to be in very good condition. I will see what I can do when it comes time to apply them. It looks as though the bonnet decal will have to stay in one piece. But I plan on trimming the roof and hatchback decals to make application a bit easier.

Cool kit. That hood decal looks to be the monster. As far as old decals, I've had luck using Testor's Decal Bonder, which can be purchased separately from their decal making kit.

Hi Cole,

I don't normally follow race car builds, but I shall be following this one, I loved the old 240Z's...

I like the Datsun 240Z a lot! You have a good idea for using all the parts available without having to do any surgery on the body. Big long decals like these alwys scare me a little. I hope yours are cooperative and mold nicely to the body curves and contours. Good luck!

Going to look great Cole I would scan the decals into the computer first, that way you can always make up a new set with the printer

Thanks to all, and thank you John for the advice regarding the decals.

The engine is mostly done. After looking at the photos, I think the valve cover needs to be repainted with Alclad, possibly polished aluminum. A lot of parts will be placed on the floor of the garage, hence I'm not following the directions too closely.

The engine is looking good Cole, are you going to wire it? I'd suggest spraying the rocker box with dull coat though, unless you want a more 'custom' look.

Maybe also fill in the back of the air filter as the carbs look unnaturally sunken into it:

Thanks for the advice and the photo Al. I will act on half of your advice by dull coating the rocker cover and modifying the air filter intake. If I were to place the engine in the chassis, none of it would be visible. As is, I'll be putting all the different parts in a diorama. The engine will have limited visibility(My own rationalization).
