PostSubject: Accurate Miniatures 1963 Corvette Grand Sport 1965 Sebring 12-Hours   Thu 12 Feb 2015, 1:01 am

I started this one back in Dec 2010.

Another nice kit from AM but once again there is a problem with the exhaust manifolds. Apparently, they wont fit properly. However, this time there is a 'fix' in some after market versions. Once bitten, twice shy so I bit the bullet and ordered a pair.

They took quite a while to arrive so the build stalled and I never got back to it, until now.

Here is where I am at right now:

The colour separation line isn't that great but there is a red stripe decal to go all round it.

I replaced the kit top and bottom hoses with silicone tubing. Next up will be to finish the HT leads with plug boots.

I have this kit as well, and LOVE the detail. Thanks for the heads up on the exhaust. I also know there is a transmission linkage kit available for it as well.

Great looking work under the hood, Al. I always wondered about these kits, but shyed away because of the complexities noted in reviews.

Thanks guys.

I finished the HT leads and added some fishing line cable ties......

..... but what on Earth is going on here?

The dizzy is WAY to high!! I've ssen just one completed model that was wired and the dizzy looked much lower. I can only conclude that I screwed up somewhere and have the dizzy too high.

Now I have to figure out where and how I screwed up and come up with a rescue plan!!! I think it is too far forward.

Oh boy! Joy of Joys.

If anyone has an unstarted one of these, I'd very much appreciate a close up photo of the inlet manifold please.

Cool Vette! How do you glue the plug wires to the distributor? Super
glue? What's the trick to bundling the wires? I need to learn some tricks
before I attempt to wire my '32. Looks beautiful.---John

John... the HT 'pips' on the dizzy were drilled out using a .48mm  drill bit in a pin vice. Then the HT leads were secured with CA.

The dizzy on this one is big, so I was able to drill the individual 'pips'. On most 1:25 scale dizzys, I find them too small to do this so simply remove the centre coil 'pip' then drill a single large hole and secure the HT leads into that using epoxy.

Buck drills the pips on 1:25 scale dizzys but I forget now how he does it. I think he has some sort of jig!!

The cable ties were made in the same way as I use on roll cage padding. See HERE

Sam..... thanks for the photos. They confirmed my fears and pointed the way forward.

I was able to free the dizzy without damage and found out I'd pinned it with piano wire. I also removed the coil to locate the dizzy in that position. That's when I discovered the remmnants of the lug the dizzy SHOULD have been located in.

My only excuse is that the AM instructions are somewhat vague!!! Oh well!!

I relocated the dizzy and the coil and voila!!! it now fits properly!! Happy bunnie!

Love the look of that engine. Despite the Distributor problems it's a good looking engine.

I don't use a jig when I drill the distributors, I free hand each hole.

Thanks Buck.

Life seems to keep throwing me curve balls at the mo so I haven't got a lot done in the last few days.

I have, however, installed the Lakes Pipes and the brake servo with added lines. Not sure why I bothere with the lines, it's almost impossible to see them when the chassis is installed in the body!!! LOL

Started work on the P/e bits. The rear axle cooler scoop is a vast improvement on the styrene piece.

And to think I passed on this kit long ago because I thought it was ugly. Now I see there's a real reason I didn't get involved in it.

I commend you on your perseverance, Al. If it fails, that would make a great hot rod motor.

Thanks guys.

Progress is slow as I'm not feeling too good at the moment.

Mike, it's not going to fail BUT if it DID..... the engine would most likely end up here:....

.... and be called 'Cobratee' or Corvetee'

I have 5 Accurate miniature kits. Two vetts and 3 Can Am cars. To be honest I'm a little intimidated by them. Need to be on my A game before I dive into one of them.
I hope the build goes well, Ill be watching. Hope you feel better soon.

I'm with Brent. I have both the McLaren and Corvette kits. I have read that they are very tricky to build, so someday, I will tackle them!

Shaping up very nicely Al. I'll be back here when I get to the assembly stage on mine.
ATM it's mostly rough sanded & bagged.

Thanks guys.

They are tricky to build but you guys have it in you to do them I'm sure of that.

Life is still interfering with fun I'm afraid and will do so for the next couple of days!!

Not much of an update but at least it's a step in the right direction. I made up the cooling system exit vent using the supplied P/e. Slow and fiddy but worth the effort.

Somehow I've missed this one Al. You have it looking good. Amazing amount of detail in the engine.

Thanks John.

Finally managed to get the 2k clear on. Just the decals to add plus a few doo dads and she will be finished.

Oh boy!! I am not looking forward to applying the roundels borders decals.!!

Thanks Ash!

Oh boy! joy of joys!!

First decals on, are the red separation line stipes but oh! dear, they are breaking up in the water.

I'm guessing the rest of the sheet will be shot too!!

In desparation I'm trying some red tape but I'm not hopeful at all. I'll see what it is like tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure AM have closed down so a replacement set there seems very unlikely.

I did find this on the web though....

Could anyone here print me a decent set. Will beg, borrow, steal, trade or pay!!
