PostSubject: Monogram Chaparral 2D Coupe   Thu 15 Jan 2015, 11:47 pm

Very old ex motorised kit. Possibly original issue:

Curbside so not a lot of parts:

Windscreen was cracked when it arrived, so it will get some 'race tape'.

The body was rough in several places:

But cleaned up OK and is at least a decent representation of the 1:1.

The interior is very basic so I may use the supplied driver figure in this one!!!

All or parts of the kit were also used for their slot car (I believe), so quite a basic kit as a model.  I have the I.M.C. well detailed "model specific" Chaparral 2E.  This Monogram is REALLY basic compared to it.  Your model is rare enough to merit building and none-the-less a good addition to anyone's collection.  Finished model could probably be sold on f-Bay for good $$$.  Best o' luck!

I have seen this kit built a couple times at different forums. Have never seen it get a good review. Bad fitment and very few parts seem to be the main issues.

Make it pretty, buddy.

I remember this and other cars as slot car bodies in the mid sixties. At the race tracks you had to have a driver (???) to be able to use the track so the kits included a sort of interior. They were all made obsolete when the Lexan bodies came out since they were so much lighter and gave you a lower center of gravity. Makes since that Monogram (and the other model kit companies) would want to sell to the broadest possible audience.

Al, while your kit might be the earliest world kit, it certainly wasn't an early US kit. No way that we would have metric dimensions let alone any other language but English in the sixties.

So not you have two dog Revell/Monogram kits in a row. Are you looking for a third? Maybe the group can suggest one for you...

I think I adapted this kit over a 1/24th rc model chassis years ago....  Looks very similar.

Looking forward to seeing the end result.

Dave, I am afraid of where Al would "suggest" we put it.

The kit was originaly intended to be a slot car so we static builders can't expect to much of it.

The Fujimi 2D looks better but it too is curbside (Molded into the interior pan top engine detail) and while it does have more parts, not by that many. However, it too may find it's way into my stash at some point. LOL.

Got the colour and clear coats laid.

Ya snuck in there when I was psoting John. Go for it, it will pose you no problem with your skill set.

The chassis/floorpan on this kit, is a work of art!!!! LOL

The 'engine' leaves a lot to be desired, so I dechromed it, sprayed it with Alclad dull aluminium, gave it some blackwash and added some proper stacks using electrical bootlace ends.

Needs a bit of touchup.

I have no interior ref. photos for this car so I haven't a clue if it had a red steering wheel and gear lever or not. It just brightens up an otherwise lack lustre cockpit:

The next Jim Hall creation was the "2E." Here's link to the Y.T. Chaparral 2E walk around. Great talk given in the 7 min video, tho no engine shots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFVOooG5yeo.

Interesting video Harron, thanks for posting.

Being an old kit, I was expecting trouble from the decals but not a bit of it. They were strong, pliable and adhered well.

The black portions of the windows were a little tricky to do though and the demarcation lines are not very well defined.

It's looking beautiful. Decals look nice and dense, windscreen black came out well, and love the patch on the windscreen.
