Hi Pete,

The truck looks spectacular. You've made a lot of progress since we saw this last year in Salt Lake. Look forward to seeing it in 2015!

Here is the latest on the race truck.

The roll cage is complete with the exception of the driver's door netting. Seats, belts, roll bar padding, dash, radiator overflow tank, steering are all in. The steering U-joints are a little large, but these were found in my parts bin, and were cut apart so they actually work. The netting is done, and the attachments just need completion. Then the cage is ready to bolt to the chassis. Here is a front view photo:

Here is the birds-eye view, showing the dash and controls. Also added was the lip on the horizontal surface in front of the dash. This represents the lower windshield mounding. As the cab will be removable (for showing the interior detail), the lower edge of the windshield will mate to this lip when the cab is installed from the top. Windshield is made from acetate sheet.

And here is what it looks like from the rear:

I added the horizontal bars into the roll cage for the shoulder belt attachment. They were painted, then glued in with CA, and then the adhesive touched up with paint. It came out OK, and actually looks like it was soldered in!

Working on the paint repair on the chassis fairing. After one final blend sanding, there will be one more color coat.

Can't wait to get the roll cage onto the chassis!

A progress report on the race truck.

The chassis is nearly complete. The roll cage is complete and attached. All plumbing and piping is in, as is electrical wiring. Here are right and left side views:

All that is left is to get the two rear axles on wheels, and then assemble the front 5 link suspension (with coil-overs), so that all wheels sit on the ground! A fifth wheel (turntable to the Brits and Aussies) is done and just needs assembly to the chassis.

Here is a view looking back under the cab, and it shows well the wiring and plumbing. It also shows how much of the Detroit Diesel engine is up under the cab:

The clear is on the cab and chassis fairings:

I put on two coats of Omni 2 part clear, so I have plenty of clear to polish, as there are a few minor dust particles in it.

Here is the photo of the hood, showing the pattern where I have to scribe in the joint between the hood surface and the grille surround. The surround will be done in BMF, and trimmed to the scribe line.

Lastly, here is a picture of the hood with my grille assembly held in front of it. I will trim the right and left edges of the grille to be wider than the opening, so when it is put into the opening, it will bend and take the curve of the front of the hood. The grille will be painted semi-gloss black, and then the bars covered in BMF.

So that is it for now. I have a few days left to work on it before I head to Florida for 3 weeks of bicycle tours.

Wow! Wow! Wow! That should about cover it. I hope you have a chance to hook up with Clay when you are in Florida. That would rock.

Buck, looks like we will try to meet up on the afternoon of Jan 26, if all goes well. I am looking forward to it!!! I like his creative work, and want to meet the guy behind it.

On Jan 27, I have splurged for a private tour with Don Garlits at the drag racing museum ... a "once in a lifetime" opportunity!!! Pictures to follow.

Amazing dedication to the craft! It's way beyond many of us. Still, fun to follow the build and see that it isn't "magic"!

Progress report on the Race Truck.

I now have the chassis back into the chassis fixture, that sets the front and rear heights:

Blocks front and rear set the frame rail heights. There is a cradle for the front axle. And everything is properly located fore/aft and side to side. Exhaust and fifth wheel are on, as are the rear wheels/tires. Wheel set was from KFS in England. Tires are Tamiya, with the traction tread pattern cut into the drive tires with an Exacto knife.

Here are two photos of a fit of the rear fender assembly and the rear roll bar brace (red):

Fender assembly will be permanently mounted, but brace is removable, along with the cab. This is for viewing the interior detail, and detail under the cab.

Front suspension is next.

Here will be my last post on this build for about three weeks, as I take off for Florida and some bicycle tours early Tuesday morning.

The chassis is done. Here is what it looks like from both sides:

Front suspension is in, all plumbing and wiring is in, and it is now sitting on three axles and 10 tires!!

Here is what the 5 link front suspension (with coil overs) looks like, from above and below:

Links are aluminum tubing, with RB Motion rod ends and nickel plated brass bolts. Coil overs are turned aluminum, with real springs from a stash I have. Steering rack is aluminum turned on my lathe. Here is a snail's view of the rear suspension:

And lastly, here is a view with the rear fenders and roll cage brace in place:

So when I get back, the remaining things are: cab paint is done, and just needs a little polishing and decals; chassis side fairings are also done and need decals; hood needs some body work, and then will be ready to paint.

It is getting there, finally, after years of work!

Time for an update on the race truck. I have been working on this diligently, so that it will be ready for the GSL competition at the end of April.

The chassis fairings have almost all of the decals applied:

It was almost a shame to put the decals over all of the graphics that I spent hours applying in paint/clearcoat.

The outside of the hood is now painted and cleared. Here is what it looks like:

The main center section of the hood front, and around the headlamps, will be finished with BMF, with the grilles mounted over and under it. The inside of the hood will require painting for the combination of flat black interior and the aluminum radiator shrouding. Headlamps will also need to be added.

Here is the hood, along with the upper grille, lower grille with Sterling letters, and the two side grilles:

The upper grille will have the main part of the horizontal bars covered with BMF.

So that is where it stands. I am also working on the build documentation book that goes with this competition, as this is important to show the judges all of the work that is underneath the paint. I am also making a foam lined carrying case for it, as I am flying to the competition in Salt Lake.
