Thought i'd just do a quick Sci-Fi scratch build as i haven't done one in a long time.

If you've not seen Stargate Atlantis then the ship i'm attempting looks like this

The ship design changes slightly series to series so as per normal i'll take the best bits from each and create a one-off the same as i did with "Prometheus" "starbug" and "RedDwarf"

Going to be made from styrene sheet with balsa panels for a little extra strength, the body detailing will be done in childrens foam sheeting.
I'll be detailing the insides as much as possible, seating, storage, controls etc.

Starting off by getting the sheet for the body and the end panels cut to shape and size.

Got the general bits together and then started adding some "H" bar for extra rigidity. (those little mini clamps certainly work well)

Not up on sci-fi of the last few decades, so this will be a lesson on scratching and detailing. What glue do you use on such different materials? I found to my dismay way back when, that some glues really eat into some materials and some don't stick well to some surfaces.

I use normal humbrol poly cement for the styrene sheet, cheap superglue for styrene to balsa / foam Ron.

Made the tailgate, this was a bit of sanded balsa, some wet&dry for the antislip floor and the some childrens foam for the raised detail.

This is the childrens foam i use, it can be glued with superglue / elmers (PVA) / styrene glue and is very versatile.

Hers the tailgate loosely in situ. the foams been cut to shape and then painted in the final colour ready to go on at the end.

Needed a front window, doesn't have to be too neat as there's a lot of raised detail to go around it. the "window" will be a bit of clear plastic (the stuff you sometimes get wrapped around large cream cakes to keep them in shape in the box)

added some styrene interior walls so i can attach the fronts of the cupboards and storage lockers, the walls will also add to the strength of the model.

Thanks Buck

Knocked together a simple "spacey" type consul, it won't be too visible through the front window but it'll be there to add a bit of detailing.

Balsa, foam, styrene sheet, some round head pins and a copper washer.

Got the side panels and thruster/weapons pods about finished, just a touch of detailing to do when they're attached.

The cockpit seating is sorted, just some old 1/48 chopper seating from a blackhawk. no weathering done as you'll just see them through the main window at front.

got some basic detailing done in the pod opening, needs some wiring and fine detailing still.

the inside has had it's main colour applied and a dividing wall attached with some basic detailing to break up the lines when you look in through the front window or back door.

Scratchbuilding is the tops in your hands. I look and say to myself "Self, why couldn't YOU do this?" I guess because I'm not you! Thanx for this lesson in material salvage and space.

Thanks for the comments chaps

latest progress ...

cut out the panel needed for the front of the ship, the window area cutout remnant was used as the template to make the window surround.
added some detailing to the interior divider and some wall detailing. (just foam cut out and glued into place after painting/dry-brushing.

the rear of the ship has got the same wall panelling and has had some benches added, i roughly shaped the balsa used for the beches to get a worn effect but forgot to weather and distress them before i stuck them in place (idiot) so now i'll have to see if i can wangle a dry brush and some texture through the door and bottom opening.

Managed to get a better shot inside showing the back wall detailing and pipework.

Looking at these last shots (where the camera picks up things more than the eye does) it seems i have a lot of tidying and cleaning up of some parts.

Latest update a comin' then ......

got the main external detailing on and painted, given it a quick matt black wash, next up is a gun-metal dry brush and a final matt wash, then glue the engine nacelles on, add a few extra details and highlight a few areas then tidy any little bits up.

Thanks buck, I think I may have it finished in a day or so, it's turning out better than I thought to be honest, my minds on other things at the moment and so needed a simple build for a bit of a distraction.
