PostSubject: MEK at Lowe's   Sun 04 May 2014, 2:58 am

Earlier this week I was in Lowe's Home Improvement store and came across real MEK in the paint department.  This was not the substitute they have been carrying for the last year or so.  I immediately grabbed a gallon.  I figure I now have a lifetime supply of styrene glue regardless of whether or not they pull it from the shelf again.  If you have been looking for MEK you might want to check your local Lowe's.

Pete MEK melts the styrene together. Like a weld. I apply it with micro brushes. I had never used it and then Bob Paeth got me into using it to melt styrene for body filler and to glue assemblies together. I will bring some to the next show and show you what's going on with it. Maybe at the Billetproof in June, I think. it might be in July.

I bought a gallon about three years ago, still have masses left.

Be sure to keep the cap closed tight. It evaporates at a prodigious rate otherwise

Pete:  I think MEK sets faster and holds better than a solvent like Ambroid.  To me though the big thing is price.  I got a gallon of the stuff for about $18.00 versus about $6.00 for a little bottle of Ambroid the last time I bought it.  Like Al said, keep a good seal on the can because the stuff evaporates fast.  One other thing is test it on some scrap before you start to glue up a contest winner.

Thanks for the opinions.

What I use for "fast setup" times in thin super glue, applied with either a sharp tooth pick end, or a small loop applicator that I got from Micromark. For the rest I use regular model cement, either liquid or the tube stuff if the joint needs a filler in it. I will have to look at the local Ace Hardware on my next visit at the MEK.

Pete, the big advantage of MEK is not in it's set up time but the fact that it's stronger than CA.

CA is a mechanical adhesive whereas MEK fuses the plastic together hut like welding metal.
